Mask-ing skin breakouts

Skincare is such a loaded word for women. When we hear the word 'skin', we think wrinkles, freckles, pimples, and dry, flaky or oily skin. But of all these skin problems, one of the peskiest are pimples. So even after you pass adolescence relatively pimple-free, you may suddenly find yourself very unhappily confronted by the world of adult acne in your 30s and 40s.

If you want to and have time to make DIY facial masks to help get your pimple problem under control the natural way, you may opt to look into your fridge and cupboard to find the necessary ingredients there.

Apple cider vinegar is the veritable perfect potion to help prevent breakouts as it has antibacterial properties effective in killing pimple-causing bacteria. And since it becomes alkaline upon contact with skin, it also helps balance your skin's pH level. Its astringent effect helps get rid of sebum or excess oil. After washing your face with water and toweling off, soak up a ball of cotton in pure organic apple cider vinegar and dab on each blemish. You may leave it on for 10 minutes or overnight, then wash your face clean and moisturize.

You can also whip up two to three egg whites to a froth; let the mixture sit for a few minutes then apply a layer, focusing on trouble zones, all over your face. Let it dry and then add another layer. You may repeat this process up until four layers. Leave on for 20 minutes, wash off with warm water, pat dry, and then moisturize.

Common ingredients in beauty products that also help address pimple problems are benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and tea tree oil.

Handy Hints:

• Adult acne happens during one's 30s and 40s
