Modern life is packed with deadlines, demands, frustrations and decisions. While stressful situations, in moderation, can motivate us to perform, copious amounts of stress have adverse effects on the mind and body.
Ayurveda, commonly described as the “science of life,’’ is an ancient healing art that prescribes a series of stress-prevention techniques. In ayurvedic practices, food is believed to be medicine for both the body and soul. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables and drinking fruit juices are considered essential. Nuts, dry fruits, honey, milk and limited amounts of ghee are greatly beneficial. Excess caffeine intake and deep-fried food should be avoided as they are detrimental to the body-mind-soul connection.
How you breathe can make all the difference to your exercise routine, and it is an excellent mechanism for managing stress. When you feel stressed, slowing your breathing, relaxing your muscles and breathing in while using your abdominal muscles can relax you. Your exercise routine can be a medium for recreation and relaxation for the mind as it alters the hormone levels in the blood, elevating your mood. Brisk walking, yoga and swimming are excellent activities as they incorporate various breathing techniques along with physical fitness.
A core principle of Ayurveda is meditation. A straight posture, relaxed muscles and regulated breathing intervals can normalize blood pressure and relieve anxiety. A popular yoga posture known as Shavsana or the dead body pose is utilized to manage anxiety after a long day at work. This posture involves lying down on the back with the mind closed off to every thought, its focus primarily on breathing. Shavsana relieves headaches and fatigue, and calms the brain.
