Publishing is, in many ways, still a growing industry in the UAE. On one hand, there are giants that publish newspapers and magazines; on the other hand, there is a lacuna in terms of a house that will publish fiction and non-fiction. In Dubai, publishing firms maintain a corporate presence either at Dubai Media City (DMC) or International Media Production Zone (IMPZ).
Like any other industries in the UAE, the publishing industry is also governed by procedures that streamline and regulate the formation and management of the company.
Before venturing out into this industry, you must possess a clear understanding of Dubai commerce laws. The Department of Economic Development is a great source of information on laws that govern the publishing industry in the UAE. These laws govern everything ranging from the regulation of an organization’s economic activities to trademarks, and from copyrights to protection of industrial property rights for patents and industrial design.
You must also hire a professional to help guide you through the documentation involving licensing. Also ensure that you will be able to meet all the requirements for business loans and banking services related to starting your own publishing firm.
If you are planning to set up business at DMC, apply at the Dubai Technology & Media Free Zone Authority (DTMFZA) as it approves the establishment and registration of companies at DMC and regulates all related procedures and matters.
• Publishing firms in Dubai may be in DMC or IMPZ
• Hire a pro to guide you in documentation process
• Apply at DTMFZA when opening business at DMC
