Being without clean water or having leaks or bacteria in your water supply are all very serious problems, especially during the summer months with water temperatures of around 38°C being perfect for breeding bacteria.
With a large percentage of the population composed of renters or new homeowners, water tank maintenance is regularly overlooked.
Like all aspects vital to home maintenance, there are a few simple things you can do on a regular basis to avoid potential problems in the future.
Aim to flush out the house water system twice a year or, at the very least, once a year. Even if your water tank has a well-fitted lid and is kept under cover, after a year, there will be inches of silt building up at the bottom. It's a good idea to time this, if you can, when you return from your summer holidays out of town. The water will have been stagnating in warm bacteria-breeding temperatures while you were away so you should run the taps and showers for about ten minutes to clear the worst of it out.
If your tank is hard to reach or hard to clean, whether underground, precariously placed on the rooftop or part of a shared water supply that's large enough to hold 3,000 gallons, it would be best to hire a professional water tank cleaning company. Chemicals used to clean water tanks are strong and require special permits to be used.
There are plenty of cleaning companies to choose from but try and go with a company you've been referred to as service fees can be costly.
