With a mind-numbing amount of carpet choices and variables in the market, carpet cleaning options also become highly individualized and confusing. Here is a quick guide on how to clean your carpets:
Stock up. Five absolute essentials in any carpet owner’s arsenal are a couple of dry clothes (old T-shirts or towels), mild detergent, white vinegar, household ammonia and surgical spirit. While household ammonia can be purchased at any hardware store, surgical spirit is available at pharmacies.
Spills from caffeinated beverages and drinks. Run and blot these with a dry cloth. Add a teaspoon of gentle detergent powder and a tablespoon of white vinegar to three glasses of warm water. Starting at the corners, apply the solution to the spills and blot. Continue doing so until the stain disappears.
Chewing gum and oily disasters. Get a butter knife and scrape off the gum or oily dirt as much as possible. Then use surgical spirit on the spot, followed by a detergent and vinegar solution. Blot using a dry piece of cloth.
Post-traumatic event management plan. To finish off cleaning, make a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, then spray liberally onto the affected area. Blot. Then make a three to four-inch thick pile of clean kitchen towels and place directly over stain. Leave a weight on it overnight.
If all else fails, call in the professionals.
