Obtaining a well-recognized certification can help you get a job, keep your job, and increase you and your firm's marketability and credibility within the accounting industry.

One internationally recognized accounting certification is the Certified Public Accountant (CPA). CPAs work in a variety of fields and can specialize in audit, compliance, tax, forensic accounting, fraud examination, and risk management. As an American accreditation, this is a valid certification for those looking to work in the United States or in US-affiliated firms.

A large number of institutions in the UAE allow students to sit in their CPA exams such as Berkeley Middle East, Professionals & Accountancy Centre, Lynchpin Training and Emerge Management Training Center.

Another certification for accountants is the Certified Management Accountant (CMA), which is more centered on financial analysis, strategic assessment, and organizational performance measurement. The exam is administered by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) which has a branch in Dubai. IMA has links to Genesis Institute and Morgan International on its Dubai chapter website; however, it does not officially endorse them.

There are industry-specific accounting certifications which may be useful in specific roles but may not hold the weight of a CPA or CMA. These include Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Fraud Examiner and Certified Bank Auditor, Certified Payroll Professional and Fundamental Payroll Certificate, Accredited Business Accountant and Accredited Financial Examiner.

Handy Hints:

• CPAs can work in audit, compliance and tax fields.

• CMA certification centered on financial analysis, etc.

• Berkeley Middle East, Lynchpin offer CPA exams.
