Enrolling your child in a martial arts class is a good idea. Various accredited institutes across the UAE are offering martial arts lessons for children. Training ranges from the most well-known disciplines of karate and taekwondo to the less-popular aikido and muay Thai.
Karate, the most popular and striking form of martial art, includes punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open-hand techniques. It helps improve one’s coordination skills and increase strength, flexibility and stamina.
The Korean martial art taekwondo is a combination of combat and self-defense techniques and sports and exercise which enhances one’s mental strength.
Aikido is a Japanese martial art based on the samurai way. This form has no competition element and is aimed at self-development with the essence of tai chi, kung fu and judo.
Modern arnis teaches one to defend himself using a rattan stick about 28 inches long, whereas the Brazilian jiu-jitsu is all about ground fighting and grappling. Judo is considered a derivative of jiu- jitsu.
Most of the institutes offer classes on hourly or monthly scheme. Choose a school that has a good legacy. If you are unable to drive your child to and from the school, pick an institute that offers pickup and drop-off services.
• Check which martial art your child is interested in
• Canvass at least two centers before you pick one
• Make sure the institute is reputed and accredited
