The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures one’s ability to communicate in English across all four basic language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing. Non-native English language speakers aspiring to work or pursue further studies in English-speaking countries take this test for immigration and school admission purposes.
There are two kinds of IELTS tests: academic and general training. The former is designed for those who want to study in universities or higher institutions, or for expatriates who desire to work in a country where English is predominantly spoken. The latter is intended for those planning to undertake non-academic training, obtain training programs, or for immigration purposes.
A number of training institutes around Dubai offer coaching sessions on IELTS. A typical 20-hour session charges at least Dh1,200, but it varies according to the number of hours, materials used and the trainer. Aside from coaching sessions, online lectures can also help you ace your way through the test.
To register for the test, either visit the British Council UAE on Tariq Bin Ziyad Street, near Rashid Hospital, or use its online registration system. The British Council administers two to three exams each month for Dh895. Upon your application, check the overall band score your school or agency requires from you. Your test result will be sent after 13 days, or you can check it online.
