For individuals who want to go beyond indoor sports and explore the waters, the UAE is the perfect place to engage in any watersport, with its long stretches of wide, sandy beaches. Training for any watersport is easy. All it takes are determination, a fun spirit, and a sense of adventure.
Scuba diving is perhaps the most popular watersport in the country, with diving schools present in all emirates. It is embraced by everyone, mostly for leisure purposes. The different dive shops/resorts here offer lessons for all levels, and training programs for dive instructors. They also hold diving trips within and outside the UAE. Course fees range from less than Dh200 to thousands of dirhams.
Dragon boating has also cemented its place in the UAE’s list of many watersports to try. With several dragon boat races being held in different parts of the emirates all throughout the year, it is no surprise that this team sport continues to grow and attracts newbies and regulars alike. Training sessions are being conducted by dragon boating teams/groups, and these are open to both young and old, with or without experience. Participants have the option of joining the team and regularly training with them, and being part of racing events in the future. Beginner sessions are usually free.
Another growing craze in the country is stand up paddleboarding or stand up paddling (SUP), which has become a fitness activity for some as it promotes balance and overall fitness. Suitable for all age groups, one need not be a surfer to enroll in SUP lessons, which are done in group or private. Fees can start at Dh110 upwards.
Others include sailing, wind and kite surfing, and powerboating.
