Chana Dal

- Chana dal, soaked for 2 hours, drained: 200gm
- Green cardamom: 8 pieces
- Cinnamon, two-inch pieces: 2 pieces
- Bay leaves: 4 pieces
- Coconut, shaved: ½ cup
- Green chilies, slit horizontally: 6 pieces
- Ginger, chopped: 1½ tbsp
- Dried red chilies, broken: 4 pieces
- Kalonji (onion seeds): 1tsp
- Cumin seeds: 2tsp
- Sugar to taste: 2tsp
- Cumin powder: 1tsp
- Red chili powder: 1tsp
- Turmeric powder: 1tsp
- Salt to taste
- Oil: 3tbsp

Method of Preparation:

• Boil 5 cups of water in a pan and add the chana dal, cumin powder and turmeric powder. Cook till done; add more water if required.

• Heat oil in a pan, add the bay leaves, cumin seeds, green cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, dried red chilies, kalonji and sauté for 15 seconds. Then add the coconut and sauté until the coconut starts to change colour. Remove from heat and add red chili powder, a little sugar and salt. Mix well.

• Finally, add the mixture to the cooked dal and simmer for 10-12 minutes. Add more hot water if desired to get the required consistency. Serve hot.
