Gone are the days when a man had to be satisfied with clunky sandals, or worse, gym shoes in the name of casual footwear.

Today, he is spoilt for choice as far as reflecting his effortlessly casual yet elegant style goes. The options range from canvas plimsolls and espadrilles to boat shoes and deck shoes. Then there are the boots, the desert boots, the trek boots, trainers, sandals, flip-flops and hitops – a veritable smorgasbord of footwear.

Then the choices and the range further diversify into the material used – leather, suede, canvas or waterproof. Changing trends have also resulted in most of these shoes making their presence felt at more formal dos.

Casual shoes today are also designed to be extremely event-specific. Sure, you can wear your slip-ons to a casual lunch, to meet your in-laws and to the movies. But what is the fun in that? Especially when shoe stores across the country are falling all over each other to provide customers with the best in footwear that do not only look good but also feel great.

So, is there a man's casual shoe type that is trendy and stylish across-the-board? Surprisingly, yes! Opt for classic sneakers like Converse lace-ups. They have to be shorn of any blingy glitz, should be basic and low-cut. Their very simplicity lends to their timelessness and they can be worn with jeans, shorts and even tailored trousers (think Joseph Gordon Levitt). They can be worn for casual dates, movie premieres, pool parties and strolls around the park.

Handy Hints:

• Men's casual shoes include plimsolls, sneakers, etc.

• Material used can range from leather to waterproof.

• Sneakers can go from casual dates to pool parties.
