Maxi dresses shout summer. They are perfect to wear over a bikini, or on weekend shopping dates with friends. Sometimes paired with a jacket, cardigan or shrug, these floor-grazing clothes provide a good cover-up to those who are not born with a model body. Generally unflattering, anyone can, however, manage to pull it off. They key is to find the right one for one's shape, and wear it with relaxed footwear like flip-flops, sandals and low-heeled wedges.
Petite ladies used to be told to steer clear of maxi dresses, but that has changed with the likes of Nicole Richie parading around in floor-length summer wear. Because maxi dresses can overwhelm a tiny figure, petite women must choose one in tank or column style in solid color and material that hugs the body. Ensure the length hits the ankle, add a belt to show off your waist, and wear heels to create an illusion of height.
Women with boyish frames can choose a tube, spaghetti or column dress with a drawstring detail to create curves, or ruffles and pleats to soften the look. Maxi dresses with cap sleeves and fitted waists are ideal for curvy ladies, but they should avoid those with too much detail.
Pear-shaped individuals look great in spaghetti or halter straps with an empire waist, V-neck and detailed top. Avoid striped or tiered pieces though. A dress with a fitted waist and a flared bottom suits women with an hourglass figure, while a V-neck dress, ideally with cap sleeves or thick straps, is ideal for apple-shaped ladies.
Don't forget to pile on the accessories if the occasion warrants it.
